Pura Vida: Rising Out of The Ashes of Loss

“When my husband Eduardo died, I went to Costa Rica to visit his family. I stayed to take a class at artist Holly Heller’s “Art Retreat Tamarindo” and stayed to do an extra Residency week. The following January I returned, and this time stayed for two months, rented studio space from Holly Heller and painted every day.  The third year … well the pattern was set. New relationships formed, painting promoted healing and this body of work, Pura Vida is the result”    (Excerpts from Lesley Cordero’s website)

Abstract painter Lesley Cordero uses energetic mark making, organic structures, patterns and sensuous colour to create her work.

The foundation of each piece is intuitive mark making overlaid with rich colour, pours, drips, splashes, stencils, stamps and occasionally collage pieces. Layer after layer they are scraped, painted and drawn over and finally edited out until the essence of the piece has been revealed.

Lesley lives in Hamilton, Ontario. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. She spent over 30 years teaching Secondary School Visual and later Media Arts. Since retiring she returned to painting again.

When she is not in Costa Rica, Cordero can be found in Share Space 2.0 in the Cotton Factory where she has a studio.
